Ngapain kita bangga dengan bangsa bule... sehingga kita harus belajar bahasa mereka segala. Itukan bahasanya kaum penjajah mas... harusnya mereka (bule2 itu) yang belajar bahasa Indonesia. Berbahasa Indonesia yang baik dan benar aja kita nggak bisa, malah mau belajar bahasa orang lain. Bangga dong dengan bahasa kita sendiri....

Until now, there are many young Indonesian still have wrong perception when to talk in English. Most of them are thought that the language is merely belong to the group of colonizer, in fact the colonizer was (is) learning the language and the custom of the habitant under their rule, with the main purpose how to control the people through their custom and habit.
Without knowing their (English) language, how do we know their plans to us, to our country and to our religion. How come we will have good action to counter back to their unfriendly written in their news paper, to their hidden planning to our country, and other many bad things that aiming to our country.
So, please don't be prejudice at the English language, language is just a language.
Learn it and we will know that it will give us new conviction that we have capability to speak English as others.

i just want to say that english is easier to be practiced when u're not ashamed to speak it, dont forget as well uve to take more time in a day to study english, of course u should do this if u wnt to be better in english. anyway. i was thinking about the improvement of english in indonesia before i write this. wht do u think about it? do most of indonesian can speak english? or just a few of them? and also wht about the students who still study at school, do they really can speak english or just knw it by theory?
well, i think tht's all about it. i appreciate it if u give me some replies :D

All of you said can't speak english very well,,,,but in fact from all of your comment,,i think that is not bed,,but honestly my english worst than all of you guys,,hieks,,hieks,,but i still try to learn english the best i can,,i hopes oneday i can speak english fluently same like you guys,,Amine...

Practice is the key word to be a skilled in any fields and any disciplines. including speaking of English.
So lets start to practice it.

First enriched our vocabulary, it can be fulfilled by reading Handbooks, Novel, Newspaper and other materials. And be careful when we have to chose the reading materials, because each reading material is using different method and style, choose the easy one. Some books are using common vocabulary and others are using unusual vocabulary, no matter which one we choose, surely it will enriched our vocabulary.
Use and write the word correctly, avoid slang. If we want to use a slang, use it decently and appropriately. Not all person who we talk to will understand the slang.
We have to understand the meaning of each word base on contact, such as between I can and a can, or
We have given or we have a given:
1. We have given something to somebody - 2. We have received a given .
Finally, I just want to say the reason I joint this forum, it is just to recall my English, that's all.

It is good that you have realized how important English is for our live and to be a tool to speed up our career in future.
Actually I am a retirement from one of big oil company in Riau, and English is become a second language in day by day works, but it could be the first language in writing. I am interested in this forum is based on my experience that having good English not only just a fun, but it is absolutely a must for you a young generation. The future of our country is on your shoulder, and need an appropriate tool to put it on it , we call the tool is a knowledge. Unfortunately, most of the knowledge is written in English that make us or most of us have difficulty to understand the content of the written, based on that condition we need special hand tools to open the book and to understand it well. It is an English.

So learn it seriously and broaden your knowledge gradually.

How to be a good writer in English?
I realize this forum is filled up with young persons who want to learn English, and I am not young anymore, and for that reason I will give some tips to whom likes to learn English, especially in this forum where we have to write down our idea.

Please do it correctly and properly at the beginning
Example : write you instead of u
always write I with capital, not i
avoid slang, such wanna- write down completely- I want to
make sure you know what English you are learning - American - English or English - English
always check Dictionary for spelling and meaning
If you can grasp the above tips, implement it consistently - trust me, you will have a good English. at least in written.

Why ?

Not only in English, but on every aspects in our live , if we start something new with the wrong way and we repeat it again and again, than we feel that we are already in the right track - because it is already become our habit, and believe me, it is very hard to change.

I have read one of the comments above about how he/she (?) was lazy to learn English because it was a foreign language and learning it indicates that we don't love our own language?

I can only say that I pity you for thinking like that. Have you ever pictured yourself travelling around the world? Have you ever dreamed about studying further abroad? Getting a scholarship perhaps? Have you ever thought that someday when you work you would have to deal with foreign people and that you cannot deal that in Indonesian.

I pity you because obviously you are not that kind of person. Obviously your laziness would hinder you from moving forward and that you would probably end up as a cashier somewhere in some supermarkets, why? Because you don't need to speak English to get that job of course. I pity you for not having a motivation.

....and I do hope, other young Indonesians are not like you and that they are eager to learn English because they want to move forward, unlike you who wish to stay and remain in the middle ages. Even the Germans are embarrassed now when they have to deal with foreign tourists, why? Because they cannot speak English, because they used to be arrogant bunch like you.

....and I must say good jobs to other people in this forum, everybody starts from zero, including me and only your motivation and will to learn can keep you forward and enable you to learn English. Practice practice practice...that's the most important thing and don't be afraid to make mistakes!

my english very bad, i dont rice vocabulary, i can't use structure be good, often if i speck in english, i use structure in indonesian.. (hehe...)
that is make me not conpident for it and make me shy.

i beliave that english very infortant, i feel it. because i work in coal mining contractor, very much communicaty with english.
and i am verry difficult for practical, sometime if someone speck i am understand his mean, but i can't to respond it, i cant to express.
Very sad....

You were using the word "duty", I take it as you meant "homework".
It's good that you are getting confident in learning English and it's good that you are keen to practice but I also suggest that when you want to use it, use it right and you should find a balance between "use it right /grammatical-vocabulary and spelling wise" with the passion to practice no matter how many mistakes you would make.

My only suggestion is that you double check with whatever word that you want to use but you are not sure of it. Try to look at the context in the sentence. In dictionary, duty does mean "tugas" but it has a broader meaning, for example "It's your duty/task to clean up your room", and it doesn't have any reference to homework whatsoever. If you use the wrong word, people can misunderstand what you are trying to say.

first of all, lets thanks to the god who give us oportunity to joint in this forum.
my name's putra ariyadi, from balikpapan, east kalimantan. it would be so glad to joint this forum, my english is not well, but i wanna improve for my english skill. now iam working in caterpillar dealer, and it need english language to understand system in caterpillar, and to communicate with customers( especially with stranger alias bule) so i need help from of you to improve my english. maybe we can discuss anything,

You have a good environment to develop your English with Caterpillar Company. I believe they have good training program for their employees, and there is a possibility to send their employees to attend training aboard, I hope you are one of them.

Working with Caterpillar is very challenging, not only we have to understand the English, but we are requested to know technical aspect of the engine, undercarriage, hydraulic system, operational and trouble shoot the unit. As far as know, Caterpillar is one of unit that have difficult system in numbering, model and serial number, compared to other manufactures such as General Motor, Perkins, Cummings or other Japanese Brand.
